Kids are the most inquisitive creations ever. A 5 years old kid will ask questions about almost everything he sees or hears. And you are bound to give him an answer. So how will you explain a politician to a 5 years old?
Rory Stewart made a joke about this scenario in his speech at Tedx Parliament.
“Little Billy goes to school and his teacher asks, ‘What does your father do?’ Billy replies, ‘My father plays piano in an opium den.’”
But when the teacher confronts the father about his occupation, she gets a different answer. As Stewart finishes the joke, “The father says, ‘I’m very sorry, yes, I lied. But how can I tell an 8-year-old boy that his father is a politician?’"
Rory Stewart was having difficulty in explaining being a politicians in a democracy adjudged to be the best in the world; the United States of America. How much more a Nigerian politician in this nascent democracy of ours. A democracy where politicians a best described in Oliver Cromwell’s 1653 speech.
‘Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches and would, like Esau, sell your country for a mess of pottage…. Is there a single virtue now remaining among you? Is there one vice you do not possess? You have no more religion than my horse; gold is your god. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the republic? Ye sordid prostitutes, have you not… turned the democracy temple into a den of thieves by your immoral principles and wicked practices?’
With the negative publicity Nigerian politicians are getting in the media. And considering the fact that the television is a kid's best friend. It will take more than Rory Stewart's lie in that joke to explain to a 5 years or 8 years old kid in Rory's case that his father is a politician.
